Enrollment & Required Forms

Prerequisites, Enrollment Process, & How to Complete Required Forms

Attention prospective students: There is a lot of important information packed into this web page. Please take your time and work through it carefully and thoroughly.

Course Prerequisites

As a general rule, students enrolling in field camp are expected to have completed courses in mineralogy, petrology (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), structural geology, and stratigraphy. Students that have attended field camp without completing one or more of these courses typically have had more difficulty with the curriculum.

Enrollment: Consortium Universities

Universities currently associated with the Wasatch-Uinta consortium include the University of Illinois, University of Minnesota - Duluth, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Purdue University, and University of Wisconsin. To enroll, students from these consortium universities must:

Step 1: Submit a deposit of $300 before March 1st to secure your place at camp and housing. Please make your deposit check payable to "the University of Illinois" and give it to your university's field camp contact person, who will then send it on to Dr. Stewart at the University of Illinois.

Consortium University field camp contact persons:

  • University of Illinois: Dr. Michael Stewart

  • University of Minnesota - Duluth: Dr. Karen Gran

  • University of Nebraska - Lincoln: Dr. Richard Kettler

  • Purdue University: Dr. Ryan Ickert

  • University of Wisconsin: Dr. Basil Tikoff

Step 2: Students must enroll in the field camp course offered at your university and pay any tuition and other fees through your home institution

Step 3: Finally, you will need to pay for room & board. The cost to students for room and board in summer 2024 is $2505.10 (this will be updated with 2024 rate soon). $300 of your room and board comes from your deposit. Check with your department’s field camp contact person regarding payment of the remainder ($2205.10). They will inform you how this will be paid.

Once you have completed these steps, please continue on to the Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp

Enrollment: Outside Institutions (updated 1/2024)

Students from outside institutions commonly attend the Wasatch-Uinta field camp. One of the greatest benefits associated with attending this camp is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students and staff from various schools. These individuals bring a wide range of skills and perspectives to this intense 6-week experience. The tuition for all non-consortium students is the same as for in-state students enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Duluth ($2865.50 in 2023). Contact Dr. Michael Stewart (see below) directly to explore options that may be available for your personal situation.

Step 1: Those interested should complete an online application as early as possible to get in line for any spaces that may be available and to begin the enrollment process. NOTE: the online application will ask you to provide a thoughtful answer regarding your particular qualifications, special interests, or other reasons for wishing to participate in the Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp. Draft an answer to this question before beginning your application and then cut & paste your text into the space provided.

Step 2: Once accepted, submit a check for $300 made out to the "The University of Illinois" to secure your place at camp. This should be paid on or before March 1.

Step 3: Please mail your $300 deposit (personal or cashiers check made payable to "The University of Illinois") directly to Dr. Stewart at the following address.

Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp
Statement on Health, Safety, & Community Standards

The Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp
Statement on Health, Safety, & Community Standards is specific to the field camp program and outlines: (1) the common environmental, health, and safety hazards, as well as the safety precautions and strategies needed to minimize risk to yourself and others, (2) the expected community standards of conduct, and (3) the ramifications of policy violations while at field camp. It is important for each participant to carefully evaluate the stated risks with regard to your own personal health and safety. When necessary, you are responsible for either requesting reasonable course accommodations or modifying your participation or attendance accordingly.

Use the button below to download the current statement. Text and digital signature fields in this PDF statement are enabled for use in Adobe Acrobat. Please feel free to submit digitally completed PDFs. If you are unable to use Adobe Acrobat, instructions for printing out, completing required signatures, and compiling a new PDF are included on the first page of the document.

Please note: this statement is intended for use with the traditional, face-to-face, field-based course (not the digital camp).

Required Forms: 5 Steps to Complete Your Enrollment!

Once you have downloaded the Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp
Statement on Health, Safety, & Community Standards, you must complete the following five steps. Your enrollment in the program is contingent upon the completion of these steps -- you will not be allowed to participate at camp if you fail to complete any of the following steps:

Step 1: Read and understand all of the sections in the Statement of Hazards & Standards of Conduct (pages 1-6 of the document).

Step 2: Print out and sign the Acknowledgement of Receipt (page 7 of this document) indicating that you received, read, and understand the Statement of Hazards & Standards of Conduct.

Step 3: Print out, read, and sign the General Liability Waiver for Participants and Volunteers (page 8 of this document). This waiver is specific to WUFC only and must be completed in addition to any waivers required by your own university.

Step 4: Neatly scan, merge, and submit a single, 2-page document saved in PDF format (DO NOT send photographs) containing your (1) signed Acknowledgement of Receipt & (2) signed General Liability Waiver for Participants and Volunteers. If you do not have access to a document scanner, the process of scanning documents into a PDF with your phone is easy and worth learning (see links below). Once created, email your PDF to Dr. Stewart using the button below before 1 APRIL.

Step 5: Complete an Online Personal Medical Assessment. This information will help us ensure that each activity is safe and appropriate for all participants, assist with planning & logistics, and provide critical information for first responders in case of emergencies. We understand this information is very sensitive. All medical information is held in strict confidence and – with your consent – is only shared with emergency services in the event that you are unable to do so yourself. All information is deleted and forms are destroyed at the end of camp.

Please collect the following information before you begin your Online Personal Medical Assessment:

  • Emergency contact information

  • Medical Insurance carrier, policy number, and the phone number an out-of-plan hospital would need to contact your carrier

  • Compose a short (1-2 sentences) summary of your level of experience and comfort in the field

  • Any Health & Safety (e.g., CPR/AED) training you've completed and approximate years of completion (please include any expired certifications)

  • A list of ALL prescription & over-the-counter medications that you take on a regular basis, including name of drug(s), dosage(s), & time(s) you normally take them

  • Information on any known allergies

  • Information on any dietary restrictions

  • Details associated with any preexisting medical conditions

Do not leave blank spaces!

Empty spaces are ambiguous to first responders and create unnecessary confusion that will delay your care! Unless otherwise indicated, all fields are required. If a field does not apply to you, please clearly indicate with “n/a.”

Note: If absolutely necessary to do so, send paper copies of your Acknowledgement of Receipt and General Liability Waiver for Participants and Volunteers via regular mail to Dr. Stewart at the address below:
