Scholarships & Funding Sources

Your first step in finding additional support for field camp-related costs should be to speak with the professors in your department. Many departments (and institutions) have sources of funding (e.g., grants, scholarships, and fellowships) that can be used to help offset the cost of attending field camp. In addition to these resources, you should consider applying to the following programs.

NAGT Scholarships for Field Study

Each year, NAGT makes several $500 awards to undergraduate students to facilitate their study of field geoscience. These awards, previously given to students who attend a traditional summer field camp, are now available for students attending field-based courses at any time of year. The intent of the awards is to support students' participation in intensive field courses in any aspects of geoscience (including geophysics, soil science, hydrology, etc.) that focus on students practicing skills of field observation, data collection, analysis and synthesis. Awardees are selected based on the importance of the field experience in meeting their educational and career goals, the quality of the field aspects of the course, and the importance of the financial award in allowing them to participate in the program. Application deadline is in mid February of each year. Applications are available online.

AWG's Crawford Field Camp Scholarships

In conjunction with NAGT's Scholarships for Field Study (above), the Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) sponsors 2 additional scholarships specifically for women studying in the geosciences. The Crawford Field Camp Scholarship is named for Louisa (Weecha) Crawford. In addition to the $500 to help offset field camp expenses, recipients of a Crawford Scholarship also receive a complimentary membership in the AWG. Interested students can apply for a Crawford Scholarship using the same application form as the regular NAGT Scholarships for Field Study.

GSA/ExxonMobil Field Camp Scholar Award

This award is for undergraduate students to attend summer field camp. Seventeen students will be awarded $2,000 each to attend the field camp of their choice based on diversity, economic/financial need, and merit. Application deadline is April 8th of each year. Applications available in early February.

AIPG National Scholarship Program

Assists students with college education costs and to promote student participation in the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Up to four scholarships will be awarded to declared undergraduate geological sciences majors who are at least sophomores. Scholarship awards in the amount of $1,000.00 each will be made to eligible students attending a college or university in the U.S. Scholarships are intended to be used to support tuition and/or room and board. Student applicants must be either a student member of AIPG or must have applied for student membership at the time the application for the scholarship is submitted. Applications must be received by February 15th. Application instructions are posted online.

NAGT Far Western Section Annual Scholarship

In a program offered by the Far West Section of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, academically superior students currently enrolled in school in Hawaii, Nevada, or California are eligible to apply for one of three $500 scholarships to attend the school of their choice. Eligible students include undergraduate geology majors enrolling in an upper division field geology course of approximately 30 field mapping days.(Dottie Stout Field Scholarship). Application deadline is April 1. Application instructions are posted online.
