Lodging & Food

University of Utah, Benchmark Plaza Student Apartments

WUFC was originally based out of Park City, Utah where the Hosenfeld family hosted us at the Chateau Apres Lodge every summer since 1967. Sadly, Ed Hosenfeld, the proprietor of the Chateau, retired and the Chateau was closed following our 2022 session. Beginning in 2023 WUFC moved our field station to the University of Utah student housing apartments. WUFC will be based in two separate locations: University of Utah in Salt Lake City UT, and Carlin City Park in Carlin NV.

We will be staying at The Benchmark Plaza apartments, 2155 Red Butte Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84112

Complaints, Requests, & Comments

Any requests or complaints regarding accommodations must be made to the field camp Director and never directly to the management.

The cost of Lodging and Food is included in the fees you pay to attend WUFC. This will either be collected as a fee at registration or you will pay this directly to WUFC in the form of a check. See your schools field camp representative for further information.

Special diets: The dinning halls will provide vegetarian options. Vegans may have more difficulty, but these are college dinning halls, so expect some options. Halal and Kosher diets: there should be options at each meal that do not violate these dietary restrictions. When camping in Carlin, folks with dietary restrictions may need to provide their own meals. We will know in advance what will be served, so you can plan ahead.

Rooms and Roommates and meals in Salt Lake City:

Roommates will be assigned by the WUFC director. Our intention is to mix roommates of like gender from separate schools to foster community at camp. If you have special circumstances such as religious practice or LGBTQ+ ally requests, please contact Prof. Stewart well in advance of the start of camp (April 1) to ensure accommodations.

At The University of Utah in SLC we will be housed in furnished Benchmark Plaza student apartments. These are two, three or four bedroom apartments with a separate living area and unfurnished kitchen (no utensils or cookware). Students will share a bathroom with no more than one other student.

Laundry at UU: laundry is available in the apartment free of charge (no detergent provided)

Internet at UU: WIFI and LAN are available in the apartments

Meals at UU: Breakfast and dinner will be served at the Food Hall in the Pearson Heritage Center adjacent to the Benchmark Plaza apartments. We are in the field for lunches - plan to collect a sack lunch during breakfast. If you have special dietary requirements or restrictions, simply ask for your special lunch as one will have been prepared for you.

Linens and bath towels: Basic linens will be provided. These include fitted sheet, top sheet, pillow and pillow case, and a light blanket. If you are a cold sleeper either bring a packable blanket or use your sleeping bag as a second blanket. Towels and washcloths are not supplied, so be sure to bring your own.

Trash: Living quarters and study areas must be kept clean. Students are responsible for regularly emptying the trashcans in their rooms. All trash (e.g., lunch bags, orange peels, wrappers) must be packed out of the field and field vehicles for proper disposal.

Recycling: Please separate your recyclables. There will undoubtedly be recycling available to us.

We will be camping at the Carlin NV City Park. Tent space will be determined through communication with the camp Director during the spring semester.

Laundry - NOPE, not in the park.

Internet - NOPE, not in the park.

Meals in Carlin: All meals will be provided by WUFC and Nevada Gold Mines.

Some serious considerations:

  1. Rock samples: please store these neatly on your floor placed on a mat of sorts to protect the flooring from marring and dirt. DO NOT leave rocks in the vehicles, they will be tossed out.

  2. Laundry detergent is very difficult to clean up when spilled, especially on carpet. Store your laundry detergent in a manner that will limit the chances of spilling.

  3. Basically, treat your living spaces as if you are guests in a persnickety persons home. Don’t make messes, and for your sanity don’t damage anything - you will have to spend time and money (both of which are in short supply) to rectify any problems you create.

  4. WUFC is not responsible for damage to your rooms or the facilities. You are.
